The 2020 season soldiered on Friday evening as 78 drivers and teams signed in for Racing on the River’s Edge. Among drivers on hand were 12 A-Mods, 19 B-Mods, 9 Pure Stocks, 15 Stock Cars, 8 Grand Nationals and 15 E-Mods raced their way on to the starting grids for the night’s main events.

During the Metro Pawn and Metro Metals race program, there were 13 preliminary heat races contested to set the lineups for the five main events to close the night.

A-Mods: Mark Dotson outdueled Randal Schiffelbein Jr. for the first heat race victory with Justin Johnson besting Sam Florence during the second heat. Dotson and Johnson earned the front row starting positions for the night’s 15-lap main event.  In recent weeks, Johnson’s 2020 season has picked up a head of steam, which kept on rolling this night as he took his fourth win of the year. Dotson captured runner-up honors with Schiffelbein third. Tim Karrick’s return to action was successful with his fourth-place run while points leader Tyler Hibner completed the top five.

B-Mods: Luke Nieman captured the opening heat race win with Tim Powell second. Patrick Royalty advanced from third to take the second heat ahead of Andy Bryant while Trevor Hunt bested Nick Newton for the final heat race victory. Tops in passing points to take front-row honors for the 15-lap main event were Royalty and Nieman. Over the years, Royalty has experienced his ups and downs at Lakeside Speedway but this night was a definite up as he captured his third victory of the season to extend his points lead over Nieman, who finished outside of the top five. Powell advanced to second ahead of Newton, Hunt and Bryant.

Stock Cars: Jaylen Wettengel captured the first heat race over Tim Shields with David Oxford taking the second heat race win over Steve Herrick. Wettengel and Oxford earned the front row starting positions for the 15-lap feature. Heading into this week, only Brett Heeter had captured three main events in the Stock Cars, but Gary Donaldson added his name to that statistic as he kept his recent hot streak alive by taking his third win of the year over points leader Shields while Heeter was unable to finish the contest. Wettengel finished third with Nick Whalen and Tracy Schaefer finishing the top five.

E-Mods: Steven Makar topped Brian Andrews for the first heat race victory with fifth-starting Trevor Hand making his way to first to take the second heat over Paul Lanfermann. Front-row starters for the 15-lap main event were Mike Richardson and Makar. Heading into the night’s action, Makar had a one-point advantage over Rodney Schweizer as the pair continued their battle for the championship. Makar came away the victor on this night, capturing his fifth victory of the season with Schweizer second, Hand third, Lanfermann fourth and Andrews fifth.

Grand Nationals: Jason Park and Don Marrs shared heat race honors for the Grand Nationals and shared the front row for the 10-lap main event. Even though Park hasn’t been out every week, he has been the dominant car this year and once again proved too strong for the rest of the field for his fourth victory of the season. Points leader Darren Kling came away the runner-up with Donnie Brown, Steven Dibben and Larry Ferris completing the top five.

Pure Stocks: Garry Billings Jr. and Leroy Morrison were heat race winners and began the night’s 10-lap main event leading the field to the initial green flag. Morrison ultimately prevailed for his first feature win of the year in an upset victory over points leader Billings, who settled for second. Marshall Jewett was third with Eric Risley and Matt Janes rounding out the top five.
