(Kansas City, Kansas) At last, ‘Racing on the River’s Edge’ returned to Lakeside Speedway as the 66th season of action kicked off at the historic venue on Friday evening. Although fan counts in the stands were limited due to social distancing guidelines, it did not dampen the spirits of those lucky enough to obtain tickets to cheer on their favorite drivers as they tackled the big wide sweeping turns and long straightaways for the first time this season.

A solid car count of 90 teams signed in for 11 preliminary heat races and five main events. The overall car count consisted of 15 A-Mods, 23 B-Mods, 14 Factory Stocks, 18 E-Mods, and 20 Stock Cars signed in for competition in the five racing divisions.

Stock Car Recap: Heat Race winners were Brett Heeter and Jaylen Wettengel. Pole-sitting Heeter went unchallenged for the feature race distance by claiming the victory over seventh-starting Tim Shields who finished second. Dennie Belknap was third, Casey Shields fourth, while tenth-starting Thomas Ground advanced to fifth at the finish.

E-Mod Recap: Heat Race winners included Tim Billings and Trevor Hand. Starting the main event from row one was Hand and Dakota Earls, but it was fourth-starting Rodney Schweizer who advanced to the front to claim the victory. Hand finished second with Billings third. Making one of the biggest moves forward of the night was Justin Burnett, who came from fifteenth on the grid to fourth, Justin Asher was fifth.

Factory Stock Recap: Heat Race winners were Garry Billings, Jr., and Jason Ryun and the pair started the night’s main event on row one. Ryun eventually took the lead with a low-side pass in turn two and captured the victory. Billings was second followed by Nate Barnes, multiple-time champion Marshall Jewett, and Darrin Christy.

B-Mod Recap: Heat Race winners included Jon Sheets, Jeffrey Sears, and Luke Nieman. Kyle Henning and Patrick Royalty accumulated the most passing points and began the main event from row one. On this night, it was all Royalty as he captured the victory from his outside pole starting position. Behind him Sheets moved from fifth to second while twentieth-starting Tim Powell advanced an impressive 17 positions to finish in third, but his car did not pass post-race technical inspection, which moved Sears to third, Nieman fourth, and Sturgis Streeter fifth.

A-Mod Recap: Heat Race Winners were Darron Fuqua and Rodney Schweizer. A pair of former A-Mod track champions occupied the front row for the main event with Fuqua and Nic Bidinger leading the way. USMTS champion Rodney Sanders kept the pressure on Fuqua the entire race distance but even through a late caution, Fuqua prevailed for the opening night victory with Sanders claiming second from his fifth starting position. Tyler Hibner moved from sixth to third while Schweizer and Austin Siebert completed the top five.

Up next on Friday, June 5th is weekly racing featuring A-Mods, B-Mods, Stock Cars, Pure Stocks, E-Mods, and Grand Nationals. Pit Gate Opens 5:00 p.m., Spectator Gate Opens 6:00 p.m., Drivers' Meeting 7:00 p.m., Hot Laps 7:15 p.m., Racing to follow hot laps.
