(Kansas City, Kansas) One of the long-standing events in the greater Kansas City metro takes place this Friday at Lakeside Speedway when ‘Racing on the River’s Edge’ features the Weld Memorial. The event honors the past contributions to racing and the Weld family name, which is synonymous with Kansas City open-wheel racing.

The Weld family name features a long list of talent including Pappy, Jerry, Greg, and Kenny and the brand name Weld Wheels & Weld Roadsters. Taylor ‘Pappy’ Weld, along with Greg and Kenny Weld are all in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame. In addition to the sprint hall of fame, the Central Auto Racing Boosters Hall of Fame and Museum Incorporated, also honored the Weld family with hall-of-fame inductions for Greg Weld (2005), Jerry Weld (2005), Kenny Weld (2006), Ricky Weld (2012), and Pappy Weld (2004).

Keeping the spirit of open-wheel racing alive in the Weld family name, sprint cars take center stage at Lakeside on Friday night with the second appearance of the USAC Midwest Wingless Racing Association. When the group first hit the long straightaways and wide-sweeping turns at Lakeside in late June, it was Don Droud, Jr., who captured the headlines with his convincing win. Wyatt Burks is the current point leader over Kory Schudy, Droud, Chris Parkinson, and Wesley Smith.

Not to be outdone, the Malvern Bank Super Late Models will also compete on Friday. The group was originally scheduled to race in late May, but COVID-19 restrictions resulted in their appearance being delayed until this weekend. The group has experienced a strong season thus far with sold car counts and a mixed bag of winners leading the way, including Aaron Marrant, Tad Pospisil, Jeff Aikey, J.C. Wyman, Charlie McKenna, Justin Kay, Cory Dumpert, and Tyler Bruening. Surprisingly, multiple-time champion Kyle Berck has yet to visit victory lane, but he does have victories at Lakeside Speedway and is one of the favorites to take the checkers on Friday.

Mod-Lites return to Lakeside Speedway as drivers look to dethrone the Raffurty family from total domination in Kansas City area Mod-Lite racing so far this season. The Kansas Antique Racers will also be on hand for competition throughout the night featuring a vintage look and feel for their portion of the race program. The
Kansas Antique Racers was formed in 1980 and the club currently supports uncaged sprints, caged sprints, super-modifieds, modifieds, rails, track roadsters, jalopies, and midgets amongst their ranks.
